The core rule (in one sentence)
A player has five seconds to name three things that fit a category — and the next player can't reuse any of those answers if it passes to them.
What you need
- 2 or more players. Three to eight is the sweet spot.
- A timer. Five seconds, exactly. The browser handles this for you on our play page.
- A pile of categories. The built-in deck plus any custom prompts you've added.
- A way to score. Pen and paper, or the in-app scoreboard.
Setup (under one minute)
- Add players. Type names into the setup screen. The order is the turn order.
- Pick rounds. Three rounds per player is the standard length. For a quick lunch-break game, drop to two.

- Decide your scoring. Default is one point per successful round. See variations below.
How a round plays out
- Read the prompt. Each prompt is "Name 3 [things in this category]." Example: "Name 3 dog breeds."
- Start the timer. The five-second timer kicks off the moment the prompt is read aloud.
- Shout the answers. The active player blurts three valid answers before the buzzer.
- Score. Three valid answers = 1 point. Failure = 0 points and the prompt passes.
- Pass with a twist. If the active player fails, the next player gets the same prompt — but cannot reuse any of the previous answers (correct or incorrect).
Scoring options
The original rules are simple, but tweaks make a huge difference for replayability.
- Standard scoring (default). 1 point for a successful round. Highest total wins.
- Steal the point. If the active player fails and the prompt passes, a successful next-player gets 2 points. Adds tension.
- Exact-three. Players must name exactly three answers. Naming four or five doesn't score — the timer rewards focus, not volume.
- Knockout. Three failures and you're out. Last player standing wins. Use it when you have a long evening.
Variations worth trying
Team mode
Split into two teams. Teammates can't talk during the timer, but a teammate gets the prompt next if the active player fails — under the no-repeats rule. Great for groups of 6+.
Themed rounds
Lock all categories in a single round to one theme — only food in round one, only movies in round two. Forces players to dig deeper instead of jumping to obvious answers.
Reverse 5 Second Rule
Players name only one thing they shouldn't — e.g., "Name 1 thing that's NOT a fruit" when the category is fruit. Sounds easy, but under pressure it's brutal.
Family edition
Same rules, but everyone agrees on a kid-friendly category list before starting. Add favorites to your custom prompts so they show up automatically next time.
Strategy tips that actually work
This is a game about pattern recognition under stress, not trivia. Here's how to win more rounds:
- Think in clusters, not items. The fastest path to three answers is to find one cluster and pull from it. "Name 3 dog breeds" → all retriever breeds (Labrador, Golden, Chesapeake Bay) is faster than ranging across breed types.
- Memorize go-to triplets. Three primary colors. Three Beatles. Three planets. Have a handful of "always-three" answers cached for catch-all categories like colors, bands, or sports.
- Don't overthink the prompt. The prompt is intentionally vague. "Name 3 things in a kitchen" — fork, spoon, knife works. You don't need clever.
- Use the pass to your advantage. If you get a passed-from-failure prompt, you already have a list of forbidden answers — that often hints at the easy obvious answers, so dig into the second tier.
- Stay calm. The buzzer is the enemy. Players who panic almost always blank for the first two seconds. Players who breathe and start naming items immediately almost always get three.
Common rule disputes (and how to settle them)
- "Is X a real answer?" Group vote, majority rules. Gray-area answers get half a point if you want to keep things friendly.
- "They said two and a half things." Three complete answers or no point. The half doesn't count. The timer is the judge.
- "They didn't hear the prompt." Re-read once, restart the timer. After that, no re-reads.
- "They went over the time." Timer's call. If your timer makes a sound at zero, that's the cutoff — anything spoken after the buzz doesn't count.
